Talk by Edly: Bringing Discourse Back to Classrooms: Rethinking Online Education

On July 3, 2024, Faqir Bilal and Asad Z. Iqbal from the Edly team, presented their session titled 'Bringing Discourse Back to Classrooms: Rethinking Online Education’ in Cape Town The session emphasized the importance of Discussion-Based Learning (DBL) in enhancing online higher education. DBL is recognized for its ability to enrich student engagement and critical thinking through dynamic interactions and discourse.

 

The presenters explored various tools and practical strategies within the Open edX platform for implementing DBL. They demonstrated how these methods can create interactive and impactful learning environments, fostering advanced cognitive skills. Additionally, the session highlighted practical strategies where DBL transformed online courses into vibrant learning communities, emphasizing the role of structured discussions, peer feedback, and collaborative projects in driving student success.

 

Talk by Edly: On-campus Learning with Open edX: Now, Next, and Beyond

Another intriguing talk by Faqir Bilal and Régis Behmo from the Edly team on July 4, 2024, explored the role of Open edX in on-campus learning environments. While Open edX is well-known for its effectiveness in MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses), it has yet to be fully adapted for traditional on-campus learning. The session highlighted key gaps and strengths, drawing insights from successful on-campus implementations. 

 

They discussed how Open edX's modular architecture and customization capabilities could better serve in-person education. The discussion emphasized the synergy between product features, teaching methods, and community, aiming to make Open edX a strong open-source option for educational institutions. 

 

They also shared a vision of how Open edX could evolve to meet the unique needs of on-campus learners and educators, including potential integrations with other educational technologies and platforms.

 

Talk by Edly: Debunking Persistent Learning Myths: 2024 Edition

Asad Z. Iqbal and Faqir Bilal returned to the stage to tackle enduring myths in instructional design and pedagogy. This session debunked common misconceptions such as learning styles, the 70:20:10 rule, Dale’s Cone of Experience, left vs. right brain theory, and the myth of diminishing attention spans. By presenting evidence-based strategies, they aimed to guide educators in designing more effective and scientifically grounded learning experiences. 

 

The speakers emphasized the importance of staying updated with the latest cognitive science research and its implications for instructional design, encouraging educators to challenge outdated practices and adopt more effective, research-backed methods.

 

Talk by Edly: The Repo Health Dashboard Unveiled

Usama Sadiq and Muhammad Soban Javed introduced attendees to the innovative Repo Health Dashboard, a dynamic system designed for comprehensive health checks of software repositories. The session offered a deep dive into the tool’s components, user-friendly checks, daily routines, and personalized reports. This talk demystified the technical aspects of the dashboard while providing valuable insights for a general audience, emphasizing its potential to enhance the development and maintenance of Open edX projects.
