Picture this: you're searching for information about Mars exploration. Instead of checking different articles, the web could gather everything for you, showing how NASA missions, Mars rovers, and discoveries are connected. This is possible due to the Semantic Web and Linked Data, which aim to make the internet more efficient and useful. In this blog let’s discuss semantic web and linked data in more detail.
The Semantic Web, an idea from Tim Berners-Lee (creator of the World Wide Web), makes data easier to share and understand across websites. Today, computers display information without truly "understanding" it. The Semantic Web helps computers make sense of data, connecting related information.
Currently, much of the web is unstructured. For example, a webpage might list Einstein’s birthdate, but to a computer, it's just plain text. The Semantic Web would allow the computer to understand Einstein as a person, connecting him to topics like physics and relativity.
Together, these technologies make the web smarter and better connected, simplifying how we access information.
While the Semantic Web organizes and helps machines understand data, Linked Data connects related data from different places, creating a global network of information.
Tim Berners-Lee proposed four rules for Linked Data:
Linked Data makes it easier for both people and computers to find and understand relationships across data.
The Semantic Web helps organize data in a way that machines can understand, while Linked Data links this information across different parts of the web. When combined, they form a network of interconnected data, allowing machines to recognize relationships between different pieces of information.
For example, if you’re looking up Leonardo da Vinci, the Semantic Web helps the computer recognize him not just as a name but as a famous painter and scientist. Linked Data then connects this understanding to related information, such as his paintings and historical context.
1. Google Knowledge Graph: Have you ever noticed how Google sometimes gives you quick, direct answers in search results? This is thanks to Linked Data. Google uses it to gather information from databases like Wikidata and Freebase. By 2021, the Knowledge Graph had collected over 500 billion facts on 5 billion different topics. This means faster, more accurate answers to your questions.
2. Wikidata: Behind Wikipedia’s wealth of knowledge is Wikidata, a massive, free database that organizes structured data. It helps keep Wikipedia accurate in over 300 languages and holds more than 100 million items, making sure the information stays consistent across all its entries.
3. DBpedia: DBpedia is like a data treasure chest, taking structured data from Wikipedia and turning it into Linked Data. This makes it easier for users to ask detailed questions and explore information in a more flexible way, opening up a world of insights from Wikipedia’s vast collection.
3. Healthcare and Biomedical Research: In the medical world, Linked Data is being used in projects like Bio2RDF to connect different biomedical datasets. By linking up information on diseases, genes, and drugs, researchers can uncover new relationships faster, leading to important medical breakthroughs.
AI relies on structured data to understand and process information. The Web of Data created by Linked Data helps AI systems interpret relationships, making them more intelligent. Virtual assistants like Google Assistant and Siri use this structured data to answer questions accurately.
Though promising, the Semantic Web and Linked Data face challenges:
The Semantic Web and Linked Data are changing how we use information online. By organizing and connecting data, machines can understand it better, offering more accurate search results and insights. These technologies are already helping in areas like search engines and healthcare, and as they evolve, they will continue to transform the web into a smarter, more connected space.
