With huge claims and throwing the world into a frenzy, Elon Musk has finally revealed the ‘scary smart’ chatbot - Grok 3. This latest version is designed to be faster, smarter, and more powerful than all its rivals. But is it truly a breakthrough, or is it just another hyped-up pseudo-milestone in the ever-accelerating AI race?

On Monday, 17 February 2025, xAI showed off its next generation of artificial intelligence models, the Grok 3 series. The new generation replaces the Grok 2 models and has been hailed for its significant improvements in capabilities.

The launch went live with presentations from Elon Musk himself, and xAI engineers. The Grok 3 series offers a variety of large language models (LLMs) of varying parameter sizes and variants with a reason-based strategy.

But the bigger question is - Is the hype real or is Musk just struggling to stay in the game?

Let’s dig deeper!

The Infrastructure Behind Grok-3

“At times, I think Grok 3 is scary smart,” said Musk via video conference at the World Government Summit in Dubai on Thursday. The chatbot runs on xAI’s Colossus supercomputer. xAI’s Colossus supercomputer used over 100,000 Nvidia GPU hours to train Grok-3, making it one of the most advanced AI models today. The system was built in just over eight months and is packed with new capabilities. Colossus is the biggest H100 cluster of its kind in the world, created with the objective of training xAI’s Grok language models.

To handle the increasing demand, xAI is in talks with Dell Technologies to buy over $5 billion worth of AI-optimized servers powered by NVIDIA’s GB200 semiconductors. This investment highlights xAI’s commitment to making Grok-3 even stronger.

Shivon Zilis, Neuralink Director and Musk’s partner described her recent experience with Grok-3 as “one of the most unexpectedly rewarding hours” of her life.

The Shift - The Recent AI Models

Grok 3’s launch comes at a time when AI innovation is moving at breakneck speed. (We know the drill!) Just a month ago, the AI world was shaken by the rapid rise of DeepSeek, a Chinese model that took everyone by surprise. Its latest version, R1, made such an impact that major AI companies had to rethink their strategies. OpenAI responded by releasing its first reasoning model for free. The update was quickly followed up with the launch of Deep Research AI. Following OpenAI Deep Research, quickly bridging the gap was Perplexity which recently launched its Deep Research. And now we see Grok 3.

What is Grok 3? - Offerings and Benchmarks

Grok 3 is much more powerful than its predecessor, Grok 2. With ‘10 times more computing power,’ Grok 3 can process complex queries in seconds, making it significantly faster than previous versions.

In tests, Grok 3 outperformed top AI models like Google Gemini, DeepSeek V3, Claude, and GPT-4o in math, science, and coding. These benchmarks were previously led by DeepSeek, but it too is struggling to stay in the lead.

The Grok 3 family includes several versions. Grok 3, Grok 3 mini, Grok 3 Reasoning, and Grok 3 mini Reasoning. Some are already available, while others are still in testing. Musk said they’re hiding some steps in the reasoning models to make them harder to copy. This helps keep Grok 3 strong and reliable.

“Actually, we should explain why we call it ‘Grok.’ The term comes from Robert Heinlein’s novel Stranger in a Strange Land. It’s used by a character raised on Mars and means to fully and profoundly understand something. The word ‘grok’ conveys deep understanding, and empathy is an important part of that.” - said Musk.

The company's data illustrates that Grok 3 excels compared with the best industry generative chatbots. It comes with improved reasoning with Think Mode for logical processing and Big Brain Mode for complex problem-solving.

So looking at Chatbot Arena, it is ranked #1 with an over 1400 score. This is the highest recorded for a publicly available model.

  • Math - Grok-3 outperforms all the existing models on AIME’24, solving complex algebraic and combinatorial problems more reliably.
  • Science - It leads on GPQA, exhibiting advanced expertise in graduate-level physics, biology, and chemistry.
  • Coding: On LiveCodeBench, it generates executable and optimized code more accurately than previous versions.
  • Reasoning - It enables multi-step logical processing through its “Think” and “Big Brain” modes. That improves the accuracy in problem-solving.
  • Speed vs. Accuracy -  Grok-3 mini variant responds faster but sacrifices some reasoning depth.

The Grok 3 model comes with two new features - DeepSearch and voice mode.

Grok DeepSearch is xAI’s version of Deep Research, recently launched by OpenAI and Google. It searches the Internet and X platform to gather and analyze information for complex queries. It then creates detailed reports, making it easier for users to find insights.

Grok Voice mode will let the AI respond verbally, improving user interaction. However, it won’t be available until the launch. Musk said it could roll out about a week later.

Grok 3 is now available for Premium+ subscribers on X - which costs $22 monthly and $229 annually. xAI is also launching a new subscription called SuperGrok for the Grok mobile app and website. In addition, SuperGrok is priced at $30 monthly and $300 per year.

Elon Musk added, "We are launching a separate subscription called Super Grok for dedicated fans who want the most advanced capabilities and earliest access to new features. This is available for both the Grok app and our new website, grok.com.”

With so much happening around AI, it is hard to catch up on! But it looks like the future will be more competitive than anticipated.

Are you prepared for the next shift, then?
