Just when we were still getting used to DeepSeek-R1, another contender stepped into the spotlight: Kimi k1.5. This model is already outperforming other AI models such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Alibaba's Qwen, Claude and its own country-mate DeepSeek on key benchmarks.
Built by Moonshot AI, a Beijing-based company, Kimi k1.5 is proving to be a serious rival to some of the most powerful AI models out there. In key performance tests, it has even outperformed GPT-4o and Claude Sonnet 3.5, showing that China is making major strides in AI innovation. This isn’t just another AI launch—it’s a clear sign that China is stepping up its game in the global AI domain.
Kimi k1.5 is an advanced AI model built by Moonshot AI in Beijing. Unlike OpenAI’s o1 which is adept at solving problems by breaking them down into smaller pieces, Kimi k1.5 is better at handling math and coding problems while working with multiple types of data such as text, images and videos.
Compared to OpenAI’s o1, which focuses on breaking problems into smaller steps, Kimi k1.5 is faster and more versatile. It can handle a variety of tasks, like math, coding, and processing text, images, and videos, more efficiently.
Unlike DeepSeek-R1, which mainly focuses on text, Kimi k1.5 is more powerful and flexible. Another important fact is that Kimi k1.5 costs less to develop than similar AI models in the U.S. The creators of Kimi believe it can compete directly with OpenAI’s O1, and its strong test results support this claim.
Kimi k1.5 is a big step forward in AI learning and problem-solving. Unlike older AI models that work with fixed data, Kimi keeps learning and improving over time. This is because it uses a special method called reinforcement learning, where it learns from its mistakes and feedback. This helps Kimi solve complex problems by combining different types of data, like text, images, and code.
Both DeepSeek and Kimi k1.5 use reinforcement learning to improve their reasoning abilities, but they apply it differently with supervised learning. DeepSeek first tried using only RL with DeepSeek-R1-Zero, allowing the model to learn complex problem-solving on its own.
However, they later discovered that adding a small amount of supervised fine-tuning before the RL stage in DeepSeek-R1 helped improve performance and solved some of the challenges with pure RL. On the other hand, Kimi k1.5 takes a hybrid approach from the beginning. It first uses supervised fine-tuning with long Chain-of-Thought examples to build a strong reasoning foundation, then uses RL to make responses shorter and more efficient.
So, while both models use RL, DeepSeek applies supervised fine-tuning as a refinement before RL, while Kimi uses it as the first step before optimizing with RL.
